Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend passed through the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
