Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People using such treatments must be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Doctors propose the way of the jabs explains the amplified regain.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden return of appetite.

"It was like something activating and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts caution that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
